I’m back with a Vengence
December 31st, 2008 adminOk, maybe not a vengence, but in the New Year I’m going to make a concerted effort to write more. Keep an eye out for more posts about politics and unpolitics (yes I know thats not a word).

Well a needed “vacation” from politics was necessary for me to keep my wits about me. The microfication of everything having to do with this election is causing things to get overwhelming. I’m a junkie so I can only imagine the type of political atrophy the general voting populous is feeling because of all the blabber. Then again maybe I just see more of it. Speaking of blabber, a great(well maybe just decent) article here on the Washington Post about all the punditry and worthlessness of what we call cable news. The general gist is at least somewhat accurate in my mind.
The News media can serve a variety of purposes. The question I seek to answer is what should the primary mission of a healthy news media? I think this question is most interesting in the context of politics, especially considering it is election season and all.
I contend the media’s primary mission is to inform the public and to serve as a filter on the propaganda and opinion filled information network that we are exposed to on television, on the web, in magazines and newspapers. It is fundamentally not serving that purpose in American society and sadly doesn’t appear it will for a long time. We have pundits, talking heads, “analysts”, “experts” and every other unofficially credentialed representative of “expertise” and experience on cable news almost constantly. We have newspaper articles on legislation that are basically recitations of the morning’s Whitehouse Press Briefing with the obligatory Congressional response. Finally we have a blogosphere that repeats, enhances, and exploits every rumor for a few more Google Adsense exposures … Wait I’m part of that last group (minus the adsense thing).
This blog will soon contain posts on a variety of topics including music, politics, sports, the news, tech, and good ole life. It’ll be an evolving forum for me to share my thoughts and maybe provoke a little conversation. I welcome anyone who may be interested in joining in.
